Historical Sketch

Brief Biographies of Key Family Members:

Robert and Sarah Rumsey Means settled in Cheney's Grove in March 1830 with a 40-acre grant from her grandfather's service in the War of 1812. Their Kentucky-born daughter Keturah (23 Feb 1821-15 Jan 1910) married Tennessee-born James McMackin (28 Sep 1814-7 Jan 1892) in 1842 and raised three children: John, Mary, and Henry. Many folks called James "Uncle James McMackin."

Son Henry K. McMackin (11 March 1859-29 April 1944) wed Emma Dena Lewis (6 Dec 1859-24 July 1943) and reared son Orral Ur and daughter Iva Marie. Henry continued to farm in Cheney's Grove. Wife Emma's father arrived in Cheney's Grove in 1847; her mother's family arrived in 1830.

Iva Marie McMackin (Dec 1893-1955) was born in Cheney's Grove Township and educated at Otterbein University in Ohio. Iva taught at Saybrook High School.

Orral McMackin (15 Aug 1844-4 Dec 1965) farmed in the Saybrook area. He wed Kathryn Arbogast and raised children Dale and Dena.

Dale McMackin (13 Mar 1910-5 Jan 1999) studied at Bloomington High School and Illinois Wesleyan University (1936.) He married Virginia "Mickie" but had no offspring. He lived in Saybrook, in Bloomington, and later in life in Troy, IL. He was both a stock breeder and a car dealer.

John D. Lewis (5 Nov 1823-26 Dec 1902) was born in Kentucky and migrated to Illinois in 1847. He wed Margaret P. Riggs (10 Aug 1831-Jan1904) the next year in Cheney's Grove. Margaret Riggs was the daughter of William (1803-87) and Nancy Pitts (1806-81) Riggs, two of the earliest settlers of Cheney's Grove. John and his wife farmed near Saybrook until 1899 when they moved into town. Among their eight children was Emma D. Lewis, who married Henry K. McMackin (see above.)
