Historical Sketch

Carl W. Loeseke was born in Bloomington in 1915. He was a graduate of Bloomington High School and a star tennis player. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Reserve School at the U.S. Naval Academy. He taught mechanical engineering at the Reserve School during World War II. In 1944, he married Janet Hoyt.

Carl and Janet eventually moved to Bloomington and opened Karls Custom Music which furnished businesses with background music. This business was sold to Howard Kelly who continued creating and selling background music. Carl also worked for General Electric in their laboratory. Carl took over ownership of the Quality Cafe, which was opened in 1918 by his father, Carl J. Loeseke. The restaurant was sold once and then repurchased by Janet whom opened a restaurant, The Terrace. Carl and Janet retired from and moved to Tucson, Arizona.

The Loeseke Family/ Quality Cafe Collection includes items from Carl Loeseke's education and professions, including the Quality Cafe and Rathskeller's. The collection spans from 1933-1988 and includes diplomas and certificates, newspaper clippings, and correspondence. There are also several menus and the scrapbook belonging to Carl.
