Why would a
resident living in McLean County (or
any other place in the United States)
cross the border to Mexico in the
1920s and 1930s?
One answer,
quite simply, is Mexico's popular
arts!
Fiesta! A Celebration of Mexican
Popular Art will feature over 150
pieces of art made by the people of
Mexico, including ceramics, textiles,
papier maché, lacquerware,
basketry, carved wood, leather, glass,
and more from every region of the
country. Visitors to the exhibit
will be invited to travel through time
to learn about the history of Mexico's
folk arts and how as these arts became
popular in the United States, they
were incorporated into the decorative
arts north of the Mexican
border. In the exhibit, visitors
will stop at the museum's time travel
agency where they will learn about
travel to Mexico in the 1930s and
obtain an official Time Travel
Record. As they visit each time
period and region of Mexico to see
examples of the different popular arts
created in each, they will get their
Record stamped. Prizes will be
given to those who fill their
Record. A market stall will
feature a vast array of contemporary
items sold at Mexican markets and
additional hands-on craft activities
will be included in this fun exhibit
which celebrates the rich popular arts
and culture of Mexico.
