FIELD TRIP PROGRAMS AND SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS
PRE-K TO FIRST GRADE PROGRAMS
Prairie Pioneers
Learn about early settlers' lives in our People
Gallery. We'll read a story of a young girl's experience and
discuss travel to the prairie using objects from the period. A
visit to our hands-on Pioneer Discovery Room, where children can wear
period clothing and try toys, games, and chores of long ago, completes
the tour..
Life on the Farm
How did farmers plant their crops? Who cared
for the animals? How did people get meat? We’ll answer
these questions and more with a visit to the Farming Gallery.
Next, role-playing in the Pioneer Discovery Room is followed by a
seed-planting activity that you can take back to your classroom.
The Kickapoo*
Students visit the People, Work, and Farming
Galleries to discover the Native Americans who lived in this area
during the exploration period (1670-1820). Hands-on activities
and games explain the Kickapoo’s home, food, clothing, and trade with
French explorers. We will also discuss conflicts between settlers
and Indians, and where the tribe lives today. This program can be
used for older age groups as well.
Pioneer
Toys and Games*- Pioneer kids made their toys;
today’s kids buy them. But do kids learn
from toys? This program discusses the
evolution of toys as tools for learning- has lots of play time too.
*program can be used for older age
groups too
