Historical Sketch

    The drinking water in Bloomington was a poor quality and quantity in the 1920s. After a drought and the typhoid fever scare in 1920, the City of Bloomington decided to create Lake Bloomington by damming Money Creek, a tributary of the Mackinaw River. Lake Bloomington was created to solve the problem of hard well water for drinking and cooking. In order to create the lake 40,000-50,000 trees were felled and cement and dynamite were shipped in to Central Illinois.

   Lake Bloomington has since become a recreational and residential area. Cabins and cottages were built to be summer homes, but are now occupied year round. Camping, fishing, boating, and swimming have always been popular activities at Lake Bloomington.

   The Lake Bloomington Association formed to improve the Lake Bloomington Area and the surrounding areas. The Lake Bloomington Association has raised funds for public access areas including camping facilities, picnic areas, and swimming spots. The Association has also provided effective communication between the City of Bloomington and the property owners or lessees.
