John F. Carlock, the founder of Carlock, Illinois

Scope Note and Family History

  The Carlock/Denman/Irvin/Porter Collection contains chiefly personal correspondence, but also school records, calling cards, daily calendars, and photographs. The correspondence dates back to the 1850s with some scattered letters associated with the parents and grandparents of Daniel Enyart Denman of White Oak Grove, IL.

Correspondence received individually by Armedia Charity Carlock and Daniel Enyart Denman first appears in 1874. The two, who married 9 February 1883, are the earliest "protagonists" of this collection. The letters and cards from family, friends and business contacts trace their family down to their granddaughter, Betty Belle (Irvin) Porter, born 19 April 1922, who donated this collection to the museum in the summer of 2004.

Armedia "Media" Charity Carlock (15 August 1858 - 8 October 1928)-- was one of eight children and the only daughter of Winton Carlock and his first wife, Lydia (Gaddis) Carlock. Her siblings, and their main roles in this collection, are as follows:

James Willis Carlock (8 June 1843 - 21 February 1919): Lived in Delano, Minn. and married to Melissa Carlock. They had a daughter Alice Carlock (Media's niece) who married Will Mealey(?) and had two children, Clara and Blanche Mealey (Betty Belle Irvin's generation) The family suffered money troubles, particularly after the death of his father.

Reuben Amos Carlock Joined his nephew Horace Burton Carlock (Son of Philip Marion Carlock) in the lumber business, R.A. Carlock & Co., later Carlock-Long Lumber Co. (1895).

John Franklin Carlock (22 December 1846 - 8 September 1916) Married Julia Ann Stephens. In the early 1880s, he owned a general store in Hudson, IL with his brother Alvin Winton Carlock. He was the founder of town of Carlock, IL and moved to Carlyle, Montana in 1907. Daisy Alice (Carlock) Artis (one of his seven children) appears in this collection. John was married a second time to Mamie (Ayers) Carlock (20 November, 1912).

Philip Marion Carlock (4 April 1850 - 27 January 1884) He suffered from typhoid fever at a young age. He married Sarah Jane "Jennie" Denman, D.E. Denman's sister (27 February 1873) They moved from Illinois to Howard Lake, Minn. in 1880. The last of his four children was born in Howard Lake-this birth is recorded in letters in this collection. His children were: Horace Burton, Willard Lee, Effie Pearl and Harry George. Horace Burton lived with Armedia and D.E. Denman in Carlock, IL for several years after Philip's death in 1884.

Silas G. Carlock Died in infancy.

George W. Carlock Wrote to Media Carlock from school in Watseka, IL, in the 1870s.

Alvin Winton Carlock Owned a general store in Hudson, IL.

Daniel Enyart "Gene" or "Jing" Denman (8 January 1855-4 October 1939) was the son of Mathias Elston Denman and Elizabeth Barbary Smith Denman. He was one of six children. The others were:

John Hampton Denman Lived in Sac City, Iowa.

Thomas Shipman Denman Lived in Paynesville, IL.

Sarah Jane "Jennie" (Denman) Carlock Long (Twin of Thomas) was married to Philip Marion Carlock until his death in 1883. She is the mother of Horace Burton, Willard Lee, Effie Pearl and Harry George Carlock. She was remarried to William Anderson Long (23 March 1901).

Eunice (Denman) Gilstrap Lived in Tacoma, Wash. She was married to W.H. Gilstrap and was the mother of Frank and Ray Gilstrap.

Belle Denman Died young and single.

Media and Gene corresponded for several years before they became engaged. During this time, Gene appears to have carried out flirtatious correspondence with several young women. Nevertheless, the couple married on 9 February 1883, a union that lasted until Media's death in 1928.

Media and Gene had three daughters: Lydia Denman (22 June 1888 - 6 January 1914), Lutie Belle (Denman) Irvin (28 February 1891 - January 1974), and Lois (Denman) Stubblefield

The collection follows Lydia's childhood and adolescent correspondence most closely. She received a large number of postcards from friends and cousins around the country and even in Europe. From 1910-1913, Lydia corresponded with and was engaged to Ralph Yoder, a young man who traveled west to Eugene, OR seeking his fortune-or at least a career and home to support a wife. Ralph's brother, Lee, and sister, Mary, also appear in this collection. In the summer of 1912, Lydia and her younger sister Lutie traveled to the Northwest to visit their relatives, the Gilstraps (Gene Denman's sister Eunice was married to W.H. Gilstrap of Tacoma, Wash.) and also spent time with Ralph. Lydia was later diagnosed with tuberculosis and the engagement to Ralph was dissolved. She spent the fall of 1913 in Globe, Ariz. with her mother, Armedia, seeking better health, but never fully recovered and died 6 January 1914. Ralph Yoder seems never to have gotten over the guilt, and wrote to the Denman family repeatedly after Lydia's death trying to justify the broken engagement.

Winton Carlock, Media's father, passed away 7 January 1914, leaving D.E. Denman as the executor of his estate. Much controversy ensued among Media's siblings and nieces and nephews as the Carlock land, consisting of about 200 acres, was divided among them, rented or sold.

Most of the correspondence collected by Gene and Media after Lydia's death consists of holiday cards and graduation, wedding and baby announcements. Lutie Denman taught school in Kentucky for a short time beginning in 1913 and later married Frank Irvin of Normal, IL. Lois Denman married Guy Stubblefield of Peoria. Both daughters remained in close contact with their father after Media's death in 1928 through his death in 1939

In the next generation, the letters in this collection follow most closely the family of Lutie (Denman) Irvin, Frank Irvin, and their two children, Betty Belle Irvin and Otis "Buddy" Irvin, who died very young.

Betty Belle Irvin, who grew up in Normal, IL, was close with her first cousins (Lois (Denman) Stubblefield's children), Media Jayne and Sarah Jean "Sally" Stubblefield, who lived in Peoria and corresponded with her second cousins, Marilyn Gilstrap and her twin sisters, Margaret and Marie, the daughters of Ray Gilstrap and his wife, Gertrude. Her other major correspondent throughout this collection is her friend, Mary Jane "Wobbly" Ward, who writes with great animation from junior high through her marriage in 1944.

Betty Belle graduated high school in 1940 and attended the Illinois State Normal University from 1940-44, where she majored in Home Economics and was certified to teach. Letters from her university peers in the fall of 1943 and written by her to her parents in the spring of 1944 illustrate the experience of a student teacher at that time. Letters from friends at college and in the service from 1941-1946 portray the experience of young men and women during World War II: army camp life in the states, the warfront overseas and, Mary Jane Ward's biggest concern, college campuses largely emptied of men.

Betty Belle began dating Charles "Bal" or "Chuck" Baddely Porter in high school and their first correspondence appears in the summer of 1939. They wrote throughout college and Charles' stint in the army (he never went overseas). The couple wed 4 July 1944 and moved to Moscow, Idaho, where Charles was in dental school at the University of Idaho. They were transferred to Tacoma, Wash. and then to Denver, Colo. in 1944. When Charles was relocated to California as he was discharged from the army, Betty Belle lived with her parents, Frank and Lutie Irvin, in Normal. Charles and Betty later moved to Marshall, IL. Their daughter, Janet Porter, was born in 1946, followed several years later by another daughter, Barbie. By the 1950s-60s, the Porter family had moved to Champaign.

What can be found in this collection? There is, most obviously, a great deal of detailed (if sometimes spotty) history of the family members involved. However, even researchers who have no specific interest in the Carlock/Denman/Irvin/Porter family will find a window into life in central Illinois from the middle of the nineteenth century through the middle of the twentieth. Nearly all letters address local weather, the health of family members, and when they last received a letter/when they expect to mail the current one. Other common themes are:
