Photo of the Week, 7: Oasis Drive-In, Lexington, 1961

March 20th, 2013

Who's ready for warm weather? Built by Elmo and Arline Winterland in 1960, the Oasis Drive-In was a local Route 66 landmark. Does anyone remember the drive-in's “Luigi Burger," a hamburger with a special sauce? Throughout much of the 1960s and 1970s, the Oasis was a popular gathering place for area teenagers.

On Friday or Saturday night one could enjoy a burger and shake while admiring the era's muscle cars parked at the drive-in. Sadly, the Oasis closed its doors for good in the mid-1980s, though it's reputation was such that in 1998 it was inducted into the Route 66 Association of Illinois Hall of Fame. Do you have a favorite memory of the Oasis Drive-In?
