John Wayne, Harold Sinclair, and John Ford on the set of The Horse Soldiers in Louisiana (1956).

Historical Sketch

Harold Sinclair was born in Chicago on May 8, 1907. He and his sister, Elizabeth, were sent to live with their Aunt Lee and Uncle Sam Wishard in Bloomington around 1915. Sinclair was attending high school and working at the Western Union, when he decided to quit high school. Sinclair relocated to Florida and then to Chicago, before moving back to Bloomington. Sinclair worked for several hardware companies, when he began writing The Journey Home (1936). After the successful publication of his first book, he quit working to devote his time to freelance writing. Sinclair continued writing and publishing successfully.

Sinclair received a Guggenheim Fellowship after Journey Home was published. Also during this time Sinclair married Ethel Louise Moran. During their marriage, they had six children. Harold Sinclair died on May 24, 1966 after surgery for an illness.

During his life, Sinclair published a trilogy-American Years (1938), Years of Growth (1940), and Years of Illusion (1941)-which is a partly fictionalized history of Bloomington and McLean County. His most commercially successful novel was Horse Soldiers (1956), which became a best seller and was eventually made into a 1959 movie directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne and William Holden. Just before Sinclair's death, his novel Cavalryman (1958) was contracted to become a television series.

Harold Sinclair's published nine novels, including Westward the Tide (1940), Port of New Orleans (1942) and Music of Dixie (1952), as well as a book commissioned by the Pantagraph telling the history of the newspaper, Daily Pantagraph 1846-1946 (1976). He also published several short stories, articles and book reviews.
